What's the difference between a roll and a bun?
Cinnamon roll vs. cinnamon bun? Hamburger roll vs. hamburger bun?

A roll is rolled, and a bun is not. A cinnamon roll begins life as a sheet of dough. It's sprinkled with goodies and then rolled up into a small cylinder shape and baked. A bun is a loaf, like bread.

True, as you say. But yet, there can be a hard roll but there is never a hard bun.Source(s): Dick whitington's Cat

A cinnamon bun is made into a roll before baking, so its one & the same.

I think in some cases the language is based on where you live. Just like I’ll call a Coke a soda but other areas of the US will call it pop or tonic. I make cinnamon rolls all the time but friends of mine raised elsewhere or are older than me call them sticky buns.

Buns are a sweeter yeasty bread and rolls are plain dough but many people use the terms interchangeably

Rich people eat rolls, the rest of us have buns.

I have never heard of a hamburger roll. Typically buns are larger and flatter and somewhat less soft. A roll is typically an unusual puffed up shaped, smaller, and softer.
