Well, Juretta, "freedman" is a historical term for an emancipated slave. Per the Emancipation Proclamation, “all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” President Lincoln issued the proclamation in 1863. The related 13th amendment to the Constitution followed in 1865.
