Was the Third Reich the Weimar Republic under a facist dictatorship?

When Paul Von Hindenburg died and Hitler became Führer the Weimar constitution remained in effect until Germany surrendered in 1945. Does this mean Adolf Hitler was in theory the leader of a republic?

"Weimar Republic" was not an official title of the German administration. It was the Deutsches Reich, which had been a republic since 1919.

That's WEIMAR - in German, you must be particular about the spelling. "EI" is always pronounced "eye". "IE" is always pronounced like "ee" - a long "E" sound. The words formed by these combinations can have widely disparate meanings.

    Third Reich = yes

    Weimar Republic = NO

The end of the free elections and free party system meant the end of the Weimar Republic (1918-33)

NO. The Enabling Act of 1933 changed the Weimar the Constitution to effectively give the chancellor (Adolf Hitler) unlimited power. At that point it stopped being anything that could be described as a "republic". From that, Hitler enacted laws that abolished civil liberties and turned Germany into a Nazi state. The Weimar was thus transformed into a fascist dictatorship and therefore could no longer be described as the "Weimar Republic".

The Weimar Republic wasn't. The Third Reich certainly was. You could be thrown into jail - or worse - for even listening to a "forbidden" radio station. In fact, in the 3rd Reich, people were given radios (called "Goebbels' Snouts" by the average German) that only played ONE station (they had no dial) - state-run radio that spewed only Nazi propaganda and "approved" music.

A republic needn't be democratic. A republic merely needs to have people representing a plurality of others in government, whether elected, appointed, or even that position was taken by force. But you are wise not to believe that something was what Hitler said it was.

      A republic is simply a gov't that isn't a monarchy.
