If you want to keep families together, then jus sanguinis is the only way to go. A child takes the citizenship of its parents, and only the citizenship of its parents!, wherever born. Of course, even in US (or other countries allowing jus solis), a child still has birthright citizenship in its parents' country. Alas, too many people fail to think about that.
The 14th Amendment was solely intended for people LEGALLY present in the US at that time. Yes, it absolutely is long past time to stop the erroneous interpretation of the 14h Amendment, and end allowing citizenship to offspring of those not legally present. Keep families together! Mandate illegal alien & other foreign parents get their child a passport from their country of citizenship, & mandate parents take their kid back to their own country. People temporarily present (e.g. students, foreign workers on temporary visas) should not be muddying the waters of citizenship, either.
