what does "in the rounded way" mean in this sentence: "they loved us but didn’t ask us to return affection in a rounded way"?

I take it to mean "indirectly" but as written, the sentence is a bit ambiguous (unclear as to which of multiple possible meanings was the intended one). I interpret it to mean that they did not require you to show affection back to them, even in an indirect way of showing that affection, although it might mean that they did not ask, even in an indirect way, for a show of affection in return.

I'm not too sure to be honest.
But my interpretation of it is that they didn't ask for a give and take relationship.
So say they gifted you something, they didn't ask for you to give them something in return.
That's the way it appears to me, but like I said; I'm not sure.
