Find the molar mass ....

PV = nRT ............... ideal gas equation

PV = mRT / M ........ n=m/M .... m=mass, M=molar mass

M = mRT / (PV) ..... solve for molar mass

M = 2.8g x 0.08206 Latm/molK x 400.K / 1.00 atm / 1.00L

M = 91.9 g/mol .... round to 92 g/mol

CxHy .....

12.0x + 1.01y = 92 g/mol

Mass ratio C:H = 10.5g:1g

Convert to moles to get the empirical formula

10.5g C x (1 mol C / 12.0gC) = 0.875 mol H / 0.875 = 1 mol C x 7 = 7 mol C

1.0g H x (1 mol H / 1.0g H) = 1.0 mol H / 0.875 = 1.14 mol H x 7 = 8 mol H

Empirical formula = C7H8

Empirical molar mass = 92 g/mol

The actual molar mass is 92 g/mol

Therefore, the molecular formula is the empirical formula.
