There is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that a person magically becomes an adult at any specific age.

There is no scientific evidence supporting magical adulthood at the age of 18.

My theory is that the age of 18 is considered an adult because most 18 year old people have already graduated from high school and are either college bound or ready to join the work force or even the military. In order to do adult things, one needs to legally be an adult so they can be responsible for themselves and have a legal signature to do so.

It just makes sense that once high school is completed, the "child" breaks away from being so dependent upon their parents as they branch out to eek out a life of their own once they are no longer minors.

    • Lots of 18 year olds are not out of HS. There are plenty of 19 and 20 year old HS students and college is still school. This is not a valid excuse to deny people their rights.

At the age of 18 by no means are you mature you may be old enough to have sex and crank out the babies. But you're certainly not old enough to resist the idiotic things that people do at the age of 18. That's the age where people do dope a lot they end up in jail a lot and where they waste all the money that they could be saving for a few years down the road.

When you're 18 you should find yourself a personal trainer and have somebody that's older than you tell you exactly what to do in order to crank out the money while you're physically able to crank out the money.

I don't even think 21 year-olds are capable of rational thought.

The scientific evidence you are looking for is that 18 is the standard age at which an individual is done with the basic education system that ends with grade 12. They are now to do as they wish with their life as an adult. They can get a job and care for themself without the need for their parents' assistance.

That's not just a United States idea. You're not fully an adult at 18. It's believed that you will sociologically be able to accept the consequences of your mistakes at 18. It's not magic and it's not just the United States idea. It certainly does not apply to all people. I know some 15 year olds that are a lot more mature than some 24 year olds. Maybe that's how they pick the average huh

Very little scientific evidence. The human brain and human judgement finally matures in one’s mid to late 30s.

No magic involved. A person legally becomes an adult at 18. Some still act like children well in to their 70's.

It's not scientific evidence that establishes adulthood at 18. It's legal evidence. There's nothing magical about the law. Moreover, there's nothing innately "child" about being a teen. Being a teen is established by something as arbitrary as the number of trips you happen to have taken around the sun, not science.

    • So if a 13 year old kills someone he should be treated as an adult? Should it be legal to have sex with someone that age?
