Can moldy black olives be salvaged?

I had no idea they would go bad.

Obviously I would rinse them very well.

I know, they are only a dollar. Dollar saved is a dollar earned.

Update:

I have a feeling the answers here would say ANYTHING out of date is automatically bad. That is not true.

Update 2:

Ok folks, the black olives are being trashed

No because the mold spores super penetrate the entire contents not just the obvious mold. This can give you aflatoxin. However, since it is salty I might consider sorting them out and washing them. The best health practice is to feed it to the pigs if any. See if they suffer.

I don't know what aflatoxin is exactly but for $1, I will throw out the black olives

Black olives are already spoiled so a little mold can't hurt anything. If you want a good olive, eat the green ones.

YUCK -- Well you won't save any dollar, if you get sick or have to go to the hospital for food poisoning.

Out of date is NOT the same thing as mold growing on food, and most folks here know the difference. You apparently do not.

I agree a Dollar saved is a Dollar earned.

But..in this case this might be more appropriate..

    Penny Wise, Pound Foolish.

This means that it may cost you more than a dollar to save that dollar!

I would not rinse off the olives and consume them.

If you opened the can or jar and they were moldy I would say return them.

If you opened the can and ate some and put them in another container and kept them in the fridge for a week then just toss them.

I have no problem opening a can that is past the "best by, use by" date as long as the can is intact. In most cases once something goes moldy I toss it. (hard cheese is an exception)
