Why are studies of lead contamination in drinking water more difficult to conduct than studies of microbial contamination (ex. cholera)?

I’m no expert but I’d say it’s easier to grow bacteria and gauge how much is there than it is to find an element in a massive concentration of water. It only takes a tiny amount of bacteria to show up to grow in a medium under the correct conditions
