Is it safe to look at humans today and say that they've lost their instincts?

No one can think for themselves anymore. Everyone has a collectivist attitude about everything, everyone is a bandwagoner or adheres to group thinking, and needs some kind of assistance or guidance through their own lives and making important decisions to get anywhere.

I don't know I would put it that way but humans rely less on instincts than most if not all other animals. I absolutely agree that too many people just go along with the herd instead of figuring things out themselves. Too often the herd is wrong.

Instincts in humans are basically ilegal and at the very least completely unacceptable.

I don't think that's new. Cultures have always been like this. Cultures change, humans don't--humans are social animals desperate to fit in with other humans for their own survival.
