The TV show Law and Order: SVU seems to be fairly realistic.?

The captain in the original episodes ranks just above lieutenant, which apparently is the rank of all detectives before promotion. As such he's probably the leader of a squad, yet the show depicts him as the leader of a precinct. Later the show has a Chief. At any rate, is a precinct an area with police stations? I googled this but apparently it changes based on the city.

The NYPD divides their force into precincts which are organized geographically. The large territory and population of the city makes this strategy make sense. A precinct will cover a certain geographic are of New York and be responsible for patrolling and investigating crime in those areas.
