Why would a man who is going through the immigration process in USA divorce the American and marry a stranger in his country?

Im trying to understand the motive. Why would he want to immigration at this point if he is so set on living his life elsewhere?

He is set on living his life in the US, with his original wife, from his own county. He us set on both of them living in the US. No matter who he has to scam to do it.

That is a common scam by muslim men. They get an American woman to marry them when in reality they are already betrothed (contractually engaged) to a woman in their home country. Once they get status as a US Permanent Resident they divorce the foolish American woman, go to their country to marry their fiancee, and import their real wife into the USA.

Fortunately many of them do it before the conditions on their US PR status expire (two years after getting PR status) so the scam is detected and they get deported.

The US marriage was a visa/immigration scam from the beginning. He always planned on dumping the US spouse once he got into US, and bringing in someone from his country - probably with knowledge & consent of his fellow compatriot, who was party to the scam all along.

All you need to know is that you have been scammed from the beginning. Motives in such scams are obvious since marriage fraud has become the #1 way to get into another country. And for those scamming Americans, it's with the full knowledge that they can scam a "stupid, naïve American" at their expense. Costs them nothing. You foot all their bills for their con game.

He's obviously changed his mind. This is a major stroke of luck for his US spouse as he revealed his fraudulent intents before actually destroying that spouse's finances. Congrats!

Extremely unlikely he "changed his mind." 99% probability this was the plan - marriage fraud - all along. And YOU get to pay all his bills for 10 years!

Because the US marriage was a scam marriage and he thinks he is now safe to get rid of the US spouse and move on with his life as he intended from the start

Are you describing a scam marriage? It sometimes occurs when a foreigner will marry an American in order to immigrate to the USA because of the marriage. Then after the immigration -permanent residency process starts and the foreigner can stay in the USA, divorce the American and marry somebody else. If the American complains that the marriage was a scam, the immigration authorities might deport the scammer. But, if not, the new citizen can then marry a foreigner and bring that person in through the immigration process. It is one of the reasons why the process is years long and drawn out and made difficult.
