Public education K-12 has deteriorated drastically since late-1960s-1970s. Decline has severely accelerated since the 1990s, as standards have been watered down, plus so much money is diverted to education of massive numbers immigrants & illegal aliens - starting with English as a Second Language programs, but much, much more. Social promotion is the norm instead of requiring specific performances at each level. Thus many HS grads are near-illiterate, near-innumerate, & woefully under-educated.

University education still ranks well overall worldwide since there are many excellent universities. Many of the world's top 10, top 100 & top 500 universities are US schools. Of course, with over 3000 colleges & universities in the US, there are those among the world's greatest universities, and those near-worthless, not even ranked internationally. US has a far wider variety of schools & school-quality than any other country.

It is if you remove the low-income and immigrant students whose first language isn't English from the testing pool.

Unlike many other countries, we test everyone. In many nations, only the university-bound are tested, not the kids who are going to leave school at 14 to work on a farm or in a garment factory. If you look at the results from only middle-class and better students, they are indeed on a par with those of the rest of the world.

Actually not. Even foreign education specialists have commented that US test results for the middle-class or better students are just as good as theirs.

In the united states we educate all students. The rest of the world does not. Most countries have students in elementary grades but only the elite and the top 2 percent of the students go on to high school. So our general population school performance is being compared to the very best of the best in other counties. It is for this reason we have so many foreign students in our colleges. They get accepted here and not in their own countries. Our colleges have quotients for accepting students by nationality to some extent which is surprisingly a good thing. If not for quotas the entire Ivy League student body would be 100% Oriental.

It is on par. It's just that in America, there is a desire to give anyone who wants to attend college the opportunity to attend.

It is. Many US universities rank among the best in the world. Most of their students dome from the US education system. About 60% of the freshman class at Harvard every year is from public schools. Now, how could they compete in the top university in the world if their schools hadn't prepared them? The predictor of academic success is the socioeconomic status of the family. Uneducated parents don't earn much AND they can't prepare their children for school or help them while in school. Our problem is our high poverty rate, caused by hundreds of years of discrimination and keeping some groups from good access to education and jobs.

I'd be willing to bet that ibn guru hasn't been near a k-12 school in decades. He's got a very bad case of "everything is worse than when I was young."

Wrong, gyp. Taught in US & abroad, friends are teachers (at a top-rated public school) constantly talking about work. Poverty is not the issue. Parental attitudes, expectations, actions ARE. Do they buy $100 sneakers, or supervise homework after supper & long hard day at work?

WRONG. better than Canada's, UK, Australia and of course all the third world countries like Mehico. Actually it's leading the world.

America has Harvard, MIT, and many other leading universities and people from the UK, Canada and all over the world come here to learn.

I hate to tell you this, dear, but testing results in socialist and even Communist countries have been quite good for a very long time.
