Why does the United States, "the land of the free," have the highest percent of its population in prison than any nation in the world?

Update:

EVERY source confirms that the US leads the world. And the majority are NOT there for violent crimes, but for drugs, DUI and theft.

We have had too many idiots running things in too many places. Blacks no longer have fathers in most families thanks to government taking over as fathers. Local mayors and politicians are better at fleecing the local population than helping their population. We have over 330 million people so comparing us to almost every other nation isn't fair. I think we need to focus more on violent crime but too many are trying to put fewer in prison and let them out too soon IMO. I'd end prison sentences for nearly all drug offenses. DUI offenders typically get many chances and how many chances should we give them. People that steal often have an implied chance for violence.

Because the country isn't as free as it claims.

It's one of the rare countries that still has slavery explicitly permitted in their constitution, as a punishment for breaking the law.

It is profitable for big companies to use the prison population as cheap labor. It is not in these companies interest to have less people put in prison.

And since it's and extremely capitalist country, the big companies lobbyists have more power than the people. So people are put in prison rather than rehabilitated.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This is the 13th amendment.

They have the hugest number of people who feel entitled to commit crimes.

So much so that San Francisco has basically made crime legal.

If you commit a crime don't you think you should be punished?

The primary reason is because the US has a very large underclass. One characteristic of those in the underclass is that they tend to commit more crimes than those in working, middle, and upper classes.

    Laws were broken, weren't they?

Perhaps those sentenced to death SHOULD be put to death.

The prison population would drop by at least 33%.

I was on Florence East when 2 in Flo. S. were, Took then 45 minutes Each to die. A gasp every minute, they died slowly, painfully. Even though both were Damned Guilty. everyone on F.E. agreed they did not deserve to die like that.

Because people are immoral and break the laws.

Am I for prison reform? Yes.

But prison reform without reformation of the heart will do little to decrease criminal activity.
