i strongly recommend Microsoft Word. it has a visual list of them.
otherwise, you'll need to use keyboard shortcuts for the symbols.

Depends on the operating syystem your laptop is running.
For Windows, "Richard J" is correct - though soliciting for "best answer" is not exactly appropriate... and Richard J neglected other operating systems.
For macOS X, in the upper right corner of the monitor, there is a flag (If you are in the US using American English, it will be an American flag). Click on that flag.
If you select "Show Emoji & Symbols", then a window will appear which allows you to select the type of special character you want from your keyboard.
If you select "Show keyboard viewer", a keyboard will appear on the screen - and when you press on your real keyboard, option or option-shift or option-control or whatever, you'll see the characters on the keyboard displayed on the monitor change...
If you are using a different operating system, please let us know.

Enter Character map
You can change the fonts menu in the font window
If you receive an answer to your question that was right on target? Let the answerer and the Answers community know it was helpful by choosing it as "Best Answer.", Thanks!
