Because Republicans keep cutting taxes for their wealthy donors and the government isn't in any business. Taxes are the only source of income. If we got rid of the Bush and Trump tax cuts we could go back to the time of a balanced budget and a reduced deficit.

Your gummint spends more than it makes in taxes because your economy has been in the toilet for the last 15 years. You have relatively nobody making (selling) anything any more and all the big corporations avoid paying tax despite earning billions of dollars every year. Everything you buy is Made in China and their billionaires grow fat on Yankee gold while you guys are all on welfare. Normally I couldn't give two f***s except the US economy affects every global economy. Your POTUS seems to get it, but those Demtards and their Green New Deal and similar BS are out to lunch.

Because they spent all the money on golf and moon rocks, stupid wars, and giving money to the poor all over the world.

Everyone wants the stuff they get from the government. Nobody wants to give anything up. But nobody wants to pay taxes either. So it's just easiest for politicians to spend us into debt because nobody seems really to care about it. I mean even the Republicans care about the debt only when there's a Democrat in the White House.

Reagan was the one who figured out that a president can sign every spending bill and come out smelling like a rose. People get what they want, but when the bill comes due that president will be safely out of office and it will be some subsequent president's headache. For instance, the Republicans whined and b*tched and moaned about 'Obama debt', but about 90% of it was debt Obama inherited from Reagan and the Bushes!

Reagan and every Republican president after him has spent money like water to stimulate the economy, then bragged constantly about how great the economy was going. Until the debt caught up with them and bubble burst and we had a recession. Now we're looking down the barrel of the totally predictable Trump recession

Well.. it was relatively low and reasonable foreign debt until after Bush was elected. The War in Iraq and Afghanistan kicked our butt financially and no one wants to go back to our old military budget now. Baby Boomers have also been retiring, which was a problem we've long seen coming but couldn't/didn't really do anything about. The majority of our national budget is Social Security and Medicaid alone.

Raising the income cap on Social Security would make it solvent for another 50 years.

Because we’re afraid to start taxing the rich like we used to until Reagan rolled out massive tax cuts for the rich with his failed “trickle-down economics” scheme. His ideas were nothing new. In the late 1800s, it was called “horse and sparrow economics.” If you feed more oats to the big horses, they would poop out more undigested oats for the tiny sparrows to peck out from the piles of poop on the roads. It was universally rejected back then as being a stupid idea.
