In 1788 the British First Fleet of 11 ships, carrying about 1500 people arrived at Botany Bay (Sydney). ... About 160 000 convicts were brought to Australia from 1788 until 1868. Free immigrants began arriving in the 1790s. For the first few years they did not have much food, and life was very hard.

It was because the Americans were fighting the War of Independence to kick the British out of America the British had to find another country to send these convicts to. they had began transporting convicts to America but America refused to accept them any longer. Several years before captain cook had explored the East coast of what was to become Australia. His report showed the east coast actually had potential for a colony with good soils for agriculture. The British needed a place escaped convicts could not walk back to England from and their labour could help build a profitable new colony for Britain's empire and they were so right.

The British Government began transporting convicts overseas to American colonies in the early 17th century. When transportation ended with the start of the American Revolution, an alternative site was needed to relieve further overcrowding of British prisons and hulks. Earlier in 1770, James Cook charted and claimed possession of the east coast of Australia for Britain. Seeking to pre-empt the French colonial empire from expanding into the region, Britain chose Australia as the site of a penal colony, and in 1787, the First Fleet of eleven convict ships set sail for Botany Bay, arriving on 20 January 1788 to found Sydney, New South Wales, the first European settlement on the continent.

The British needed a faraway place to put prisoners.

I assume you mean "the nation of Australia"
and not (as some answerers assumed) "the territory of Australia".
Here is a brief and (in my opinion) unsatisfactory summary
This lengthier article is much more informative. Who knew...a gold rush seems to have set it on the path of nationhood.

It is incorrect to think of Australia as being "founded" since there have always been indigenous peoples living there. Outsiders started showing up when Great Britain decided to exile its career criminals to spare the ongoing expense of jailing them.

I'm not sure what you're looking for. It was founded because the British wanted to establish a colony there. Or are you looking for the fact that Britain made it a penal colony?
