CNN is....and has been from the beginning....a selling tool. Back in the 1970s, when TV networks still went off the air around 1AM and devoted about 2-3 hours a day to news, Ted Turner envisioned what he called "24-Hour Interactive TV."
Others scoffed at him, especially his "crazy" claims that TV would not only broadcast 24 hours a day, but that viewers would be able to watch in bathrooms, on buses and in grocery stores. He basically correctly predicted the internet and the "smartphone" generation.
Ted knew that he who controlled what people watched would also control what they bought...and he knew what advertisers, political hucksters and religious zealots have known for ages: People in an emotional state are more prone to buy what you're selling than people in quiet thought.
All the mega-media corporations now follow Ted's strategy...find an emotional segment of viewers, run programming that keeps them continuously emotional and then sell your loyal audience to advertisers for the big bucks...
