There are three primary types of “paper” used throughout history. Paper as we know it was invented by the Chinese in the 1st Century BC. This type is a pressed and dried thin sheet of wood pulp. Parchment has been used quite a while longer but was most popular in Medieval Europe. It’s made from stretched animal hide. The oldest is papyrus which was used by the ancient Egyptians up through Classical times. It’s a product of river reed blades pressed and dried together.

Like most inventions of this type, no one really invented it. The next person just made improvements on what everyone had been using before.

good answer & good point; also, it was developed independently in several places, as well as various manufacturing methods; eg, the word Papyrus refers to the paper used in Ancient Egypt, & paper was made & used in Ancient Asia, Rome, etc
