So some colleges prefer students who have alumni parents. Is there really a way the school can prove a parent attended?

Yes, usually if you are claiming to be a legacy (the relative of an alum), you have to submit your parent/aunt/whatever's name and class year. It is easy for the school to check its own database to verify that your parent did exist and graduated from there.

Yes. Schools keep records of past students.

They keep records of all students who have attended, and will have transcripts on record for all of them too.

And it's not that they necessarily prefer to accept those students; they just give them preferential treatment in the hopes that their parents will donate to the school.

Schools keep records. If the school has been around long enough, they have your great-grandparent's transcript, attendance records, professors' reviews & recommendations. Of course they can verify if & when your parent attended! Lie & your goose is cooked - fried extra-crispy!

Um, yes. They would check their records of enrollees.

Jeez. Did you know that schools keep records of students, and that includes alumni? Schools are more liable to prefer students with alumni parents who CONTRIBUTE MONEY to the school.
