I don't think it's a bad thing to ask for a fair deal. We buy masses of things from China. The least we could ask is that the stuff we buy isn't infringing on copyrights and trademarks.
The problem is that no matter how we try to fix it, even assuming success, it's going to be bad for us in the short term, because without incentive, China is not going to bother assuring the integrity of their goods, which means it'll cost them more to follow our rules, which means we have to make it worth more to follow the rules.
-- and we all know how people love following rules instead of acting like they don't need rules.
"Oh they're trying to strong-arm us? Let's just tax everything they sell. F* them." <-- that's the standard human response.
