Which instruments in a band tend to double which others? Or do you know a resource to read this myself? I can't seem to find information?

e.g.

Saxophones tend to double the horns

(Im in a high school band)

thank you!

This is a fallacy. They might be specific arrangers/composers who write things for school kids- and not knowing the competency of the group, or the instrumental balance (8 saxes, 1 horn?) will do this so all the parts will get covered somehow. It is not REAL composition - it is the music education version of T-ball. I should know - I did this gig for 30 years.

So if you are writing for a school band of limited skills and odd balance, then YES - you want to double things across more than one part - just to make sure all parts get played. If you are writing for an advanced group with appropriate balance - compose/arrange what you wish.
