    they put you in stocks in front of the store and sell rotten produce to passerby for 10 cents a piece so they can throw it at you.

    Most of the signs say "about" or "close to" the number of items.

      They say that at the market I go to. "About 15 items." I would take a picture and post it if I thought it was worth it.

    The store security people would put you up for attention and public humiliation. "Attention Shoppers: The customer in the red dress now on the '15 items or less' checkout lane 7 has just violated store policies by attempting to purchase 16 items. This store has a 'zero tolerance' policy for such disrespectful behavior and will be banning this customer from shopping at this store in the future."
