I have a pair of polk bookshelf speakers. It says to use #10 screws to mount, would #8 be ok?

Yeah, well, they are screws. You can buy a small blister pack of any kind you want for a buck or so. Just use the type suggested. Why not?

I would use the recommended screws with them. improper installation is not covered by warranty if they drop because you used the wrong screws. that said you could use the equivalent lag screws and those would take way more then the #10's could. I always recommend use the supplied fasteners or equivalent.

I suggest using what is recommended.

Manufacturers pay engineers a lot of money to come up with good data.

If you don't mind having a speaker fall on your head --- or someone else's ---

do whatever you like, but your insurance might not cover you

for the consequences of an improper installation.

It's the length of the screw that matters. A #8 will be fine as long as it is of reasonable length.
