A young guy whose dad was lost in a shipwreck and whose mom committed suicide joins the independent cause of his country. He fights with a group of rebels and is convicted as war prisoner with his mates. There they cut off his nails, they torture him and mistreat him. After the was he gets out and goes to visit his sister, who married and had a baby with a guy of the enemy people. At first he's happy about the baby but then he gets mad as he sees his sister changed so much he cannot recognize her, to the point of not caring about his brother but more of his child's sleep and his husband dinner. He goes away cursing them and disappointed. He goes back to embark for the us. In the new country he finds a girl who is bullied because she is irish, she has to work and go to school, teachers and classmates hate her cause she's lower class. She finds some comfort in books and poetry, she writes and draws portrait of the young man who defended her from her school bullies. One day she goes looking for him, they meet, they fall in love though he tries not to develop feelings for her but it's too late. One day as she came back from school she is almost raped by three classmates. She jumps in a river and walks miles limping til she faints. The guy was fishing, finds her and brings her home. The girl lost her mom a month ago in a tragic circumstances and wants to kill herself while the guy is at work. He finds her with the wrists cut, cries and helps her. He decides to flee with her
