Why does the youtube api only allow 10000 units per day?

I'm making a chrome extension and each api call uses around 100 units but the api console says they only give you 10,000 quota per day which is only 100 calls. How do developers make apps if this is all they give you?

Many thanks.

As far as I am aware with Googles other APIs is that you can pay to have more calls. The more you pay the more you can have.

Its basically to prevent apps from abusing the api and using too muich.

In the dashboard you should be able to request an increase.
