My son's name is Anthony, but his wife and most of their friends and the people he went to school with and the people he works with call him Tony.

Not usually but nicknames can be whatever you want them to be. Tony or Ant are typically nn's for Anthony.

A "nickname" can be ANY name. It does NOT have to directly connect to the person's real name.

Typically, "Andy" is not used as a shortened version of "Anthony". But that doesn't mean that "Anthony" can't use the nickname "Andy" if that is what he likes to be called.

An Anthony can take on any nickname he wants. If he likes Andy, why not?
