It's unique. And pretty. Ignore the others, they didn't base their opinions on anything. Lavender will not get the kid teased at school, and lav for short is kinda cute.
If you called your child "dick" then obviously they would get teased. But naming them after a plant is... harmless?
What are they gonna say? "Ha! you're purple!" You'd have to be pretty inventive to tease someone with that name, especially at the age when teasing normally happens.
It's a pretty name, go for it.

Fairly old-fashioned in my experience in Britain. I might expect somebody's great aunt or grandmother to be "Lavender". Note capital for any name, even "Lavender".
