Why is it inappropriate to ask an older person their age but not a younger person?

It’s only inappropriate to ask someone their age without asking if they mind.

It isn't really appropriate to ask ANY adult their age in a social situation.

And whilst older people may be reticent about their age they may get to a point where they will volunteer the information unasked to anyone who cares to listen: "I'm eight-two you know..."

Lots of people, even sometimes in their 20s, do not want others to know how old they are. Respect for the older person.

People with more healthier foods, have far less wrinkles.

No - it's NOT "only inappropriate to ask someone their age without asking if they mind" because asking if they mind being asked their age is already being rude.

Surely you can see that saying to someone, "Do you mind if I ask you your age?" puts them in a very embarrassing and awkward situation? If they don't want to say, they then have to tell you that they DO mind - which would then make them afraid that you were going to ask WHY they minded.

It's simply inappropriate to ask ANYONE their age or anything personal like that.
