Went dancing: 'went' is the verb, and 'dancing' is a gerund.
Is skating: 'is skating' is the verb.

In the first sentence, "went" is the verb. "Dancing" is considered to be either a gerund [old school] or an adverb [in modern grammar].
In the second sentence, "is dancing" is the verb. It is in the present progressive tense.Source(s): English Teacher

"Went" and "dancing" are both verbs, as are "is" and "skating". So "went dancing" and "is skating" are the verb phrases.
