What app lets you download free books to read?

    Start by seeing which apps are compatible with your local library system. Mine allows patrons to check out ebooks through Overdrive as well as Amazon.

    Both Amazon and B&N have plenty of freebies. Just install their reader apps.

    Project Gutenberg at gutenberg.org has free ebooks that are in the public domain. They support multiple formats, including .epub (can be read by iBooks, Nook app and several other readers) and .azw (can be read by Kindles) as well as pdf.
