He didn't leave notes at the killings. He mailed them to the police who had them analyzed and concluded they were all written by the same person and that person had knowledge that was withheld from the press by police. His last killing was that of a cab driver. He took a piece of his blood soaked shirt, and mailed part of it back to the police.

There are some killings that may or may not be his. But there are enough known to designate him as a serial killer. He would have been caught today.

The FBI says that at any one time there are about 25-50 active serial killers on the loose throughout the US. There are supposedly a few thousand that were never caught. So much more has been learned since the original profiles, but the myths persist. A big one is that they never stop. They do. Zodiac may have been one of them.

It was in the 1960s -72. They discovered a pattern in deaths in Northern California. Whether all were the same killer, or some copycat, we'll never know. But the timeline and limited area do tend to point to serial killings.
