IF you are US citizen or legal permanent resident, your state of residence is whichever state where you get a job, place to live & intend for that place to be your "home." You have typically 30 days from date of your move to change your state driver's license, etc. You'll pay state income taxes from day one on the job.
Take the job, get a place to live (whether you purchase a home or lease an apartment), move your "stuff," change your driver's license & voter registration (if you're a citizen), and you're a NY resident.
It's not like being an out-of-state college student where you're still dependent on mom & dad, go home to parents' house for school breaks, etc. Dorms are not "home" - nowhere you can remain permanently.
