Basswood tree dropping leaves in July?

I have a Basswood tree in my front yard. It has been dropping those narrow leaflike things all over my lawn since mid-June. Is this normal? And is there an easier way to remove them from the lawn besides raking?

Yes, it is normal for your Basswood tree to drop what you are describing. They are called bracts, a modified leaf structure that serves to cover and protect the developing flowers until the flowers begin to open. Once flowering is complete, they will die and drop off just like the spent flowers. As for cleanup, you're pretty much stuck with raking them, or just run them over with your lawn mower.

I just mow the lawn and it picks up any leaf litter that way.
