When port forwarding what does external and internal mean?

Example for my Xbox one of the mentioned ports was 3074 UDP and TCP but in my routers port forwarding it asks for internal and external do I set 3074 for both?

Yes, set 3074 for both. External means the port that other computers are trying to connect to. Internal means the port on the computer they are actually connected to. There are some situations in which you might want to run something on a non-standard port, like a web server, for example.
