We did go back. There were several moon missions over the course of the next couple of years. But we eventually stopped because there was limited utility in going. The moon shot had mostly been a propaganda effort to beat the Russians and show them that our technology was superior. There was scientific work done, but the trips were mostly for propaganda. Once we made it to the moon the propaganda value declined precipitously, especially compared to the cost, and risks. With improvements in mechanization and satelites, any science needed on the moon could be done without sending people there. Instead of trying to send people outward, NASA, and other space agencies, focused on near earth orbital experiments and doing stuff which would aid people back on earth.
