    Debt = (3/7)*240

    Still owing = (3/7)*240*(7/12)

    = 3*240*(1/12) =

    $60

    Ernie owes O = B - P = 3/7*240 - 5/12*3/7*240 = 60 dollars. ANS. B is what he borrowed and P is what he already paid.

    I think you should say "to" instead of "from."

    If he has paid back 5/12 of what he originally owed, then he still owes 1 - (5/12) = 7/12 of what he originally owed.

    Answer: (7/12) * (3/7) * $240 = $60
