I've had to use a simple jug for VERY TEMPORARY use, as in, ran out of gas and used it to get the gas to my car, but that's it.

Impossible. It was invented in Germany before JS ever existed.

No. Gas Jerry cans are now red plastic specifically for gasoline. Gone are the old metal Jerry cans. Gas stations will not allow you to fill them up anymore.

Using anything else is just chancy. It could melt the plastic or leak out because the container is not strong enough to hold a liquid weight of that amount.

Precisely. You don't have to buy an expensive one. And if you're need is temporary, ask a neighbor if you can borrow theirs. Always say you need it until the day after you plan to return it, so you look good when you return it early!

    Some plastics melt from gasoline.

No. You need a container make to resist the hydrocarbon components in the gasoline. The gasoline may well attack the plastic in the cat litter container and let the gasoline escape leading to a possible fire.
