    I have never heard the term "First Additional Language"! Where are you? Why "first"? Do you have school populations with multiple languages?

    Reading comprehension is largely a matter of relating the new content to what the student already knows. Pre-reading strategies to build that background knowledge are very helpful. Some studies show that pictures accompanying the text are the most helpful with beginning readers, while vocabulary learning is more helpful to more advanced learners. Encouraging repeated readings has also been proven to be effective. One strategy for that is the strip story, where the text has been cut into chunks or sentences, and the students have to reconstruct the text. That requires reading each chunk several times to look for clues to its place in the text.
