What is the meaning of "keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island"?

SQUIRE TRELAWNEY, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted.

Dose it mean: You should tell every detail about the island but you should not tell the exact location of the island?

This context is from a novel named: Treasure Island.

Thanks before hand.

Yes, " You should tell every detail about the island but you should not tell the exact location of the island?"

"Keep nothing back" means tell everything. "The bearings of the island" are the navigational guides to its location. The use of "but" there is a slightly old-fashioned way of saying "except". Yes, it does mean what you have written.

tell everything EXCEPT where the island is located. The context was obvious to anyone who has read the book.

It means: don't tell anyone exactly where the island is.

It means to withhold the map location of the Island like 75 degrees West and 20 degrees North.
