    Thyroid ....

All the iodine taken in by the body will be processed through the thyroid gland to make metabolic hormones. Iodine-131 has a short half-life and in small quantities it is used as a tracer to investigate the functioning of the thyroid and to look for potential thyroid cancer. Much higher doses of iodine-131 are used to treat some types of thyroid cancer.
