Does dementia cause a deterioration in vocabulary?

My 65-year-old said that a friend of ours has a certain preface. So I told her I always thought “preface” was the introduction to a book, and asked my mom if it has a double meaning? She got snippy with me and said, “I said PREFERENCE. You don’t listen.” FYI, there was no loud music in the room, so I know what I heard. Also, this is not the first time this has happened, as my mom’s catchphrase to me lately has been “You don’t listen.” Does my mom have mild dementia? It’s very disturbing that not only does she frequently mispronounce words, but she’s in total denial that she said what I heard her say. Please help.
