Will a photographer ruin his reputation if he photographs an erotic scene?
…or are only the model's reputations at risk?
Because of the nature of the photos, some will call it art and some will call it porn.

No. It would depend upon the quality of the work. Photographers who've shot for Playboy, for example, have a decent reputation because of the amount of talent and work that goes into making those shots. On the other hand, if you make no effort in terms of composition, lighting, etc..., then you'll get a bad reputation as a photographer no matter if you shoot erotic scenes or bunny rabbits.

If he photographs 'an' erotic scene but usually photographs mountainous panoramas or stormy seas, people will say, 'Oh I see Bob Smith is trying something a bit out of his normal run'. But there is no reason why this should 'ruin' his reputation.
If he goes on to do nothing but erotic scenes, obviously his clientele will change. But nobody's reputation is 'ruined' by a couple of erotic but NOT pornographic images.

There is a difference between eroticism and pornography. Eroticism shows the beauty of the human body is a suggestive manner, while pornography is just for cheap thrills. Many great photographers and artists have used eroticism, often for magazine covers. Many bad photogrphers have taken porno pics.
You have to decide on the category of your work.

No, just do it. Your model is not known to more than 99% of mankind, and so are you.

IT may not "ruin" his reputation, but he will get a reputation for taking nothing but erotic photos

Not if he works under an assumed name like Seymour Butts.

I think both. I knew a photographer who was very kinky in his personal life but, his work was very clean. After the recession his business tanked where he used to do contracts worth 100"s of thousands. He still didn't go into porn.
