Is this the Mandela effect; I thought asbestos was gone, like gone for good. Like if they found it they Bring in hazmat crews?

But now it turns out it’s still widely used and ex dem congressman is ceo of American Chemistry Council who is the lobby for keeping asbestos in wide use. It’s not gone at all. Like some other universe!

EPA banned it in the late 80s' but then the ban was overturned by the 5th Circuit in 1991, because there were no formal studies performed on safe alternatives, and costs to ban it would cost billions. (It has benefits, like helping buildings not burn down as easily and before asbestos was used so much in building materials, there were a lot more building fires, causing much more damage, and where lots of people died).

So not a false memory in that there was a ban, but the ban was only temporary. At least in the US. There are other countries who have banned it.
