From morphine for a child's cough to oil of earthworm for bruises, cures that doctors and pharmacists were providing to make people better are quite surprising to us today. In most of the 1800's no one understood about keeping clean. Most common people never bathed their whole lives.

Victoria and Albert had 9 children and all survived until adulthood. That was not the case in most families. Some say that Albert's Fastidious need to keep the nursery clean against what doctors said .Look it up yourself. It is amazing.Take a fourth grader from the US and ask some medical questions. Our small children most certianly know more now than M.D.'s did back then.

Most EFFECTIVE medicines were made of herbs or bark or stuff we would consider illegal now, like cocaine. But most of the stuff sold that really didn't do anything was alcohol, sometimes flavoured.
