Many of them have closed. That's one reason there are a lot of homeless people.

They would have to do the logical thing -- use self help and the most powerful drug in the world (their own brains)

Nothing heals us better than the brain

The same thing that used to happen. These people used to get locked in the basement or chained in their bedroom and if they didn't have anybody to take care of them they wound up often in the street and they were either tossed scraps of food and small amounts of change or people use them for target practice for fun.

Great! Those hospitals are useless! They don't help anybody.

Well... we would actually have to see what lawmakers do. They could all be sent to group homes, they could send them to prisons or wait for them to act up and send them to prisons, they could be sent with caretakers, or they could be left on their own. MentaI hospitaIs are generally pretty bad places, and I'm convinced their only purpose is to isolate people from society so we don't have to deal with the severely mentaIIy iII. Sometimes they act as detention centers for people awaiting trial or when prisons are overcrowded, sometimes they keep minors there while they wait for foster homes or group homes for kids, sometimes you have strict parents who send their kids there because they kissed another girl or didn't get straight A's or what have you and the hospitaI is glad to diagnose them and make a few grand off them or their insurance. There is a ton of abuse, rape, sanitation issues, unethical treatments, lack of consent, etc that goes on in those places, and the staff know very well they can get away with it. There are good ones and bad ones, but overaII most of them are not about actuaIIy treating people so they can get better. There are a lot of people working to either shut down or completely overhaul certain facilities because of the poor conditions there. I personally think mentaI hospitaIs should be closed.

    • Some mental hospitals are good, some aren't. It depends on which one you go to

Psychiatric patients aren't normally held long-term these days anyway, not unless they are criminals. They'd return to their families, and those with insurance would enter outpatient therapy. Others, as is the case now, might end up on the street. A lot of mentally-ill people did so back in the 80s, when an act of Congress under Reagan eliminated funding for various community services that had included mental health care for many who otherwise couldn't afford it.
