How about NFL going to 18 game season but players will only play 16 games?

I think it’s a win-win compromise for all. Player will only play 16 games, through a combo of sitting out or benching two games.

they should then eliminate 2 preseaon games. actually playing back ups for what would be preseason games 3 and 4 should count towards there record,, then play all the regulars for the remaining 16 games, but of course some of the lineman starters should be able to play in those first 2 games, either that or like fantasy football your starting running backs recievers and qb have 2 bye weeks during the season.

Might actually be a viable solution

By how much would you have to expand the roster to make this happen?

If at all the owners will balk due to more money in salarys

Forced benching seems more like the wrong direction to me. The NFL wants as competitive of games as possible which these would not be. I think making it 18 games over say 24 weeks would be good. Add more bye weeks. Even have a full shutdown for one week in the middle of the season. Allow more players on the active roster. Most NFL stadiums are single use so a longer season should not affect other tenants.

Why would any fan want to see playoff chances get blown by second string players?

You didn't cut and paste this, you wrote that on your own, didn't you?

And you may actually be serious.

If you think this is really a good idea, I'm impressed.
