It's generally a bad thing. Give people a chance to do a job. Lay out a few basic rules and guidelines to follow, give them a task to complete and help if there are issues. Let them do their job so that you can do yours. Micro-managing every detail gives them the impression that you don't trust them, it reveals your own incompetence if you tell them to do something incorrectly (which makes them resent you even more, since now they're asking, "Well, why they hell are they a manager?! I can do their job better than them!"), and it keeps you from fulfilling your other duties, which makes you appear to be even more incompetent.
