Could a 12X30 sheet of acrylic as a lid, either 1/4" or 1/2" thick hold about 40-50lbs of cats who think the aquarium is for them?

Either way, you will have to secure it. Don't depend on just gravity to hold the lid in place.

Not doing the math, but I think I'd go with the heavier 1/2 inch thickness. I don't think that the 1/4 inch would break, but it would flex, rather a lot. 3/8 would be OK, too.

Thank you so much for answering. Don't happen to have any ideas on how to secure it?

I'm contemplating adding a wire mesh lid over top - the kind meant for terrariums, thinking that might hold the weight better.
