Why do most cars have speedometers that go up to at least 130 when you legally can’t go that fast on any road?

For passing use and ego as well. There are roads that have no speed limited on them in Texas. It is also a selling item; it helps show the per-posed power of the vehicle.

Because some jerks will buy a car based off perceived speed it can do, even if it is illegal. The law in most places states that if you are passing someone, you should maintain your current legal speed. If that isn't sufficient to pass safely, don't pass.

No. In most states, it is no more than 10MPH over their speed, no matter if they are dong limit. The safe limit may Not be what is posted, by conditions.

It's all a game of perception. Doesn't matter if your car can only go 70 miles per hour, down hill with a stiff tailwind. If the speedometer shows 150, people think of the car as being "FAST". Back in the 1980's the US Government passed a law that said automobile speedometers couldn't read any faster than 85 MPH. New car sales immediately tumbled because people didn't want to buy "SLOW" cars.

dan -- North Amboy Road, from Salt Evaporation Plan st to just south of Amboy --5 miles, near straight, near dead level, NO side roads/buildings/fences/etc.. No cops, no traffic. You can find out just as fast as your car actually do.

The speedometer is set to the expected capacity of the motor in the vehicle. That is one reason you may see different speedometer ranges in different vehicles. A sports car's speedometer is almost always going to have a higher MPH than a family mini van.

The motor is almost always designed to go much faster than legally allowed.

Think about this. If motors were designed to only go up to 70 because that is the usual maximum speed limit on the highways, then every time you was on the highway going full speed, you would be pushing the motor of your vehicle to it's maximum limit. The vehicle would wear out faster and have more mechanical issues because you would always be using it's full capacity on a regular basis.

Mine goes up to 200 mph. Some people take their cars on to tracks. You need to be able to go faster than 70mph in order to overtake people safely. Overtaking someone going at 65 if your car can't go over 70 would take ages...you'd be on the wron side of the road for a long time. Better to get the overtaking manoeuvre over quickly.
